Energy
Energy and security are matters which are nowadays most tightly interwoven. Without energy our whole society would collapse. At the same time the problem of climate change raises important questions about how we can produce our energy reliably and environmentally safe. The European Union has taken a global leadership role with its ambitious 20-20-20 -programme which aims to cut down emissions with 20 % compared to the level of 1990, to raise the share of renewable energy sources by 20 % and to raise energy efficiency by 20 % until the year 2020.There are also important questions about energy specific for the Baltic Sea region. The Baltic Sea is nowadays an important waterway for the oil trade between Russia and Europe. There is also being planned a new gas pipeline through the Baltic Sea from Russia to Germany called Nordstream. Both issues affect severely the environmental safety of the Baltic Region. At the same time the energy trade is a very important factor for the European Union, which is heavily dependent on the import of fossil fuels.
